“MatemAlquimia, a hybrid word that describes the transformation of art into mathematics, and of mathematics into art, is an installation created during the pandemic by a group of 24 artists, mathematicians, and mathematicians who, through collaborative pieces, transform concepts such as fractals, topology, Archimedean solids, and prime numbers into artistic experiences. The proposal was born from a dialogue between Ingrid Daubechies—mathematician, physicist, and science communicator, recipient of the Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize and Honorary Doctorate from UNAM—and Dominique Ehrmann, a textile artist who reinvents the limits of her discipline through sculptural installations.
MatemAlquimia comes to Universum as part of the 50th anniversary of the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems (IIMAS), and in dialogue with the Imaginario Matemático gallery.” Source: UNAM (Translation by Google)

The study of the state of preservation of paintings, and of works of art in general, appeals to a wide range of scientific disciplines. Some applications of chemistry (chemical analysis of miniscule fragments) and physics (fluorescence, X-ray imaging …) are often mentioned in this framework. The different ways in which art conservation has benefited from mathematical approaches are less well known. The conference will showcase a variety of examples, from the reconstruction of frescoes destroyed during World War II to the virtual restoration of paintings damaged by passage
of time or still covered by more recent coats of paint hiding them.
