Through the Mathemalchemy Looking Glass

Teenager Silhouette

Now that there is so much to discover in this extraordinary world, I worry that visitors may be tempted to step into it, and inadvertently trample some Mathemalchemy critters or objects …

You’re right. We should wish into
existence an extra element to
surround the peninsula and keep
curious onlookers at a safe
distance.
Maybe a ring of small table-tops?

The strangest thing happened a few months ago. It started with a really weird storm, one night, with an awful lot of rumbling. The next morning the sky was clear, but very new rock formations had materialized overnight, all around Voronoi Plaza in Downtown, even in front of the Lighthouse. When I went out to explore, I found the same had happened near the Park, just on the far side of the Sieving Meadow and Stack-of-Books. And beyond as well, near the Playground and at the bottom of Integral Hill.

They were such funny formations too – flat-topped buttes of different heights, not
quite of this world. Of course, the rocks and especially their mesa-like tops proved irresistible to the tribe of Symmetry Mice, distant cousins of mine who had earlier lent us their services for the wall and floor decoration of various establishments in Downtown.

Soon they were scurrying around, muttering about designs and patterns, putting on climbing gear, and shlepping paint pots up the rocks.

But the end results were nice. And the formations looked much better with those designs painted on them. Harriet has been commenting on the interesting mathematical properties of the designs created by the Symmetry Tribe, and is wondering about adding some items to Conway’s Curios that allude to them. Tess was unperturbed from the start, of course – she takes everything in stride.
